Bad breath can feel like an invisible barrier, holding you back from conversations, connections, and confidence. Whether it’s a temporary issue or a recurring concern, it can be frustrating and embarrassing.

The good news is that bad breath is often preventable and treatable once you understand what causes it and take the proper steps. Before you know it, you’ll enjoy fresh breath and be able to speak, laugh, and smile freely.

What Causes Bad Breath?

When bacteria in your mouth build up on your teeth, tongue, and gums, it releases a foul-smelling odor known as halitosis, or bad breath.

Other causes of bad breath include:

  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Dry mouth
  • Gum disease
  • Smoking
  • Certain medical conditions, such as a sinus infection

Preventing and Treating Bad Breath: 10 Things You Need to Know

There are many simple things you can do to prevent and treat bad breath; consider these options to freshen your breath and improve your oral health:

  1. Thoroughly brush your teeth at least twice daily, paying careful attention to your gums and back teeth.
  2. Floss between each tooth at least once daily to remove the food particles that cause bad breath.
  3. Clean your tongue with the back of your toothbrush or a tongue scraper to remove bacteria.
  4. Rinse with antibacterial mouthwash after brushing and flossing. This will kill bacteria and freshen your breath.
  5. Drink plenty of water to stimulate saliva production and flush away bacteria.
  6. Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables to keep your teeth clean.
  7. Limit the amount of onion, garlic, and spicy foods you eat.
  8. Chew sugarless gum to stimulate saliva production and freshen your breath after you eat.
  9. Visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. We recommend a dental checkup every six months.
  10. Quit smoking because it causes bad breath and is harmful to your oral and overall health.
