What Is a Dental Bone Graft? bone grafting boulder co

A dental bone graft adds volume to the jaw, repairing and rebuilding damaged, diseased, or lost bone tissue. Bone graft material can be used from the following sources:

  • Your own body
  • A human tissue bank
  • An animal tissue bank
  • Synthetic material

Dental bone grafts provide a framework for the growth of healthy, living bone. Ultimately, a bone graft rebuilds the bone so you can have a stable foundation for your teeth and implants

Who Might Need a Dental Bone Graft?

Here are some situations when Dr. Amedro might recommend a bone grafting procedure.

Tooth Extraction

When a molar needs extraction and requires a graft for healing.

Bone Loss

When a missing tooth or gum disease results in jawbone loss.

Tooth Replacement

To rebuild the jawbone before placing tooth replacements like implants.

Frequently Asked Questions

A dental bone graft is a procedure that provides a foundation for future dental work, ensuring the longevity of one's smile. When tooth loss or damage occurs, it often leads to bone loss in the jaw, compromising the integrity of oral health and the feasibility of implants. That's where a bone graft in Boulder, CO, comes into play.

The Bone Graft Procedure

This procedure involves adding bone or bone-like materials to the jaw, creating a solid base for dental implants or other necessary treatments. The material, sourced from your own body, a donor, or made synthetically, encourages your body to rebuild its natural bone. Over time, this new growth strengthens the area, making it suitable for further dental work.

Restore Your Oral Health with Bone Grafting in Boulder

During the initial evaluation, Dr. Amedro will perform a comprehensive examination to determine the condition of your jawbone and your candidacy for dental implant restoration. He also uses x-rays to ensure the bone graft’s precise placement for optimal function and comfort. Dr. Amedro may prescribe antibiotics before surgery to avoid infection if needed.

Once Dr. Amedro places the bone graft, it holds space for your body to repair independently. Essentially, bone grafting is like scaffolding that holds the bone tissue together while regenerating. As with any procedure, healing takes time, and Dr. Amedro will provide detailed instructions on recovery and aftercare.

Usually, bone grafts need to heal entirely before placing a dental implant. Because each person is unique, recovery times for bone grafts vary.

Are There Different Types of Dental Bone Grafts?

There are four main types of dental bone grafts:

Socket preservation – This type of bone graft is placed in the tooth socket, typically after an extraction, to prevent the socket’s sides from caving in. boulder co bone grafting

Ridge augmentation – People with missing teeth often experience jawbone loss. Ridge augmentation increases the volume and width of the jawbone, providing a more stable foundation for implants or other restorations.

Periodontal bone graft – Gum disease can erode the surrounding supportive bones that hold teeth in place. A periodontal bone graft reduces the risk of tooth mobility and gives the teeth additional support.

Sinus lift – Maxillary sinuses are above upper back teeth, so when those teeth are missing, the sinuses can drop down where the tooth roots once were. A sinus lift raises the sinuses back into their proper position and creates a solid foundation for dental implants. Dr. Amedro does not perform sinus lifts, but he will gladly refer you to a specialist who provides this service.
